How to Perform Wudu and Ghusl – for NEW MUSLIMS
Before diving into how to perform five daily prayers, we have to learn about wudu, ghusl, and what is the difference between these two. For new Muslims or anyone beginning their journey in Islam, understanding purification and cleanliness is important for performing prayers (Salah). You may be surprised how cleanliness plays a big part in islam. It was the first thing I was taught how to do because it is essential for performing Salah. Without wudu your Salah is not valid and praying without wudu (or ghusl in some scenarios) is considered sinful.
This guide will explain what is wudu in Islam and how to perform both wudu and ghusl step by step.
What is Wudu in Islam?
Wudu is the ritual washing performed before Salah. It purifies you physically and spiritually, preparing you to stand before Allah in prayer. For new Muslims, learning how to do wudu is an essential part of the steps in praying in Islam.
Steps for Wudu
Here are the steps for wudu in an easy-to-follow guide:
- Intention (Niyyah): In your heart, make the intention to perform wudu for the sake of Allah.
- Wash your hands: Start by washing both hands up to the wrists three times, beginning with the right hand.
- Rinse your mouth: Take water into your mouth, rinse, and spit it out three times.
- Clean your nose: Inhale water into your nostrils and blow it out three times.
- Wash your face: Wash your face from your forehead to your chin and from ear to ear three times.
- Wash your arms: Wash your right arm, then left arm, up to the elbows three times.
- Wipe your head: With wet hands, wipe your head from the front to the back and return once.
- Clean your ears: Using the same wetness, wipe inside and outside of both ears once.
- Wash your feet: Wash your right foot, then your left, up to the ankles three times, ensuring you clean between your toes.
What Breaks Wudu?
Wudu can be broken by:
- Using the toilet
- Passing wind
- Deep sleep
- Loss of consciousness
- Heavy bleeding
If any of these happen, you must repeat wudu before praying.

What is Ghusl in Islam?
Ghusl is a full-body purification required in certain situations, such as after marital relations, menstruation, or significant impurity. Knowing how to perform ghusl is essential for maintaining spiritual cleanliness.
Steps of Ghusl
Here are the steps of ghusl:
- Intention (Niyyah): Make the intention in your heart to perform ghusl for purification.
- Wash hands: Start by washing your hands thoroughly.
- Wash private parts: Cleanse your private parts and any impurities.
- Perform Wudu: Perform wudu as you normally would, except for washing your feet (which you can wash later).
- Pour water over your head: Pour water over your head three times, ensuring it reaches the roots of your hair.
- Wash the entire body: Wash your entire body, starting with the right side, then the left.
Conclusion
Both wudu and ghusl are essential for maintaining cleanliness in Islam. Knowing how to make wudu and how to do ghusl helps you perform your prayers in the proper state. Incorporating these rituals into your life as a new Muslim is a beautiful step towards strengthening your connection with Allah.
